Fulcrum Consulting, an LRS company, is seeking a Mortgage Underwriter with our client in Minneapolis, MN.
Our client is seeking an experienced mortgage professional to support and influence business decisions within the home lending space. This role is responsible for evaluating mortgage loan data and documentation to determine eligibility, acceptability, and compliance with applicable state, federal, and investor guidelines.
The ideal candidate brings strong underwriting expertise, due diligence and quality control experience, and the ability to independently analyze complex loan scenarios while clearly communicating credit decisions and recommendations.

Our client is seeking an experienced mortgage professional to support and influence business decisions within the home lending space. This role is responsible for evaluating mortgage loan data and documentation to determine eligibility, acceptability, and compliance with applicable state, federal, and investor guidelines.
The ideal candidate brings strong underwriting expertise, due diligence and quality control experience, and the ability to independently analyze complex loan scenarios while clearly communicating credit decisions and recommendations.
Responsibilities:
- Perform detailed analysis of conventional conforming, Non-Agency Jumbo, HELOC, and HELOAN loan data.
- Conduct pre- and post-purchase due diligence reviews, including preparation of correspondence, deficiency resolution, and related follow-up tasks.
- Analyze complex tax returns and accurately calculate borrower income.
- Identify key loan factors impacting borrower eligibility, property eligibility, and credit qualification for complex or atypical financial profiles, collateral types, and loan structures.
- Identify and summarize exception loans for escalation to leadership to support informed business decisions.
- Accurately input loan data and detailed notes into appropriate loan systems.
- Maintain established quality and production standards.
- Communicate credit decisions clearly and professionally—verbally and in writing—to maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Clearly explain specific reasons for adverse or negative purchase decisions and recommend potential solutions when appropriate.
- Collaborate with internal partners including Risk, Product, Compliance, and Legal teams.
- Support internal and external audit requests, including participation in internal control testing.
- Partner with leadership on credit policy updates, including ongoing review of agency, competitor, and regulatory requirements for potential adoption.
- Mortgage underwriting experience
- Quality control and/or due diligence experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- 5+ years of mortgage underwriting experience.
- Demonstrated ability to independently access, process, and interpret complex financial and credit information.
- Experience with quality control and/or mortgage due diligence reviews.
- Strong knowledge of property and credit underwriting requirements for FNMA, FHLMC, Non-Agency Jumbo, FHA, VA, HELOC/HELOAN, and other residential loan programs.
- Servicing knowledge, including line management review and subordination requests.
- Ability to work independently, analyze data, and recommend appropriate actions with minimal supervision.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
