Codeworks, an LRS company, is seeking a System Engineer who enjoys working hands-on with mission-critical communication systems, troubleshooting complex technical issues, and supporting secure, reliable radio operations. This contract opportunity offers the chance to support statewide radio communications systems across correctional institutions while partnering with technical teams, vendors, and public sector stakeholders to ensure operational excellence.

Location: Wisconsin (Hybrid)
Candidates must reside within one hour of Madison, WI, or be willing to relocate within one hour of Madison prior to their start date at their own expense. This position includes a hybrid work schedule with travel to correctional facilities throughout Wisconsin as needed.

Responsibilities

• Configure, maintain, troubleshoot, and support EF Johnson radio systems and related communications technologies.
• Assist in developing, recommending, and implementing radio system standards across  facilities.
• Support the installation, maintenance, and lifecycle management of radio communications equipment and supporting infrastructure.
• Assist with fleet mapping, code plug management, radio programming standardization, and radio inventory management.
• Maintain databases and documentation related to radio assets, fleet maps, connectivity diagrams, and system configurations.
• Coordinate the procurement and deployment of radio equipment while ensuring compatibility, standardization, and cost effectiveness.
• Support the administration of FCC radio frequency licenses and related regulatory requirements.
• Assist in maintaining tower licenses and FAA approvals where applicable.
• Work with external agencies to support interoperability, mutual aid communications, emergency response planning, and frequency coordination.
• Participate in statewide radio communications planning and technology modernization initiatives.
• Assist with the configuration and support of networking equipment, including switches and communication devices supporting radio systems.
• Connect radio systems to existing state network infrastructure and ensure compliance with state technology standards.
• Install, configure, maintain, and back up workstations supporting integrated radio communication environments.
• Collaborate with vendors, engineers, architects, facilities personnel, and agency stakeholders on system upgrades and new installations.
• Assist in developing communications plans, disaster recovery strategies, operating procedures, and security-related documentation.
• Conduct onsite assessments, testing, troubleshooting, and quality control reviews of radio systems throughout the state.

Qualifications

• 1-2+ years of experience supporting, configuring, maintaining, installing, or troubleshooting radio communication systems.
• Experience working with EF Johnson radio systems or similar public safety radio technologies.
• Knowledge of radio communications systems, fleet mapping, radio programming, code plug management, and communications infrastructure.
• Experience supporting hardware, software, and network technologies associated with radio communications systems.
• Understanding of FCC licensing requirements, radio frequencies, and interoperability concepts.
• Experience maintaining equipment inventories, technical documentation, and system records.
• Familiarity with networking concepts, including network topology, connectivity, and troubleshooting.
• Experience supporting technical installations and working directly with vendors and technical partners.
• Ability to travel throughout Wisconsin for onsite support, installations, and maintenance activities.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience using Microsoft Office and related productivity tools.
• Microsoft Visio or similar diagramming/documentation experience is preferred.
• Advanced PC and technical support skills are preferred.

The base range for this contract position is $40.00 - $50.00 per hour, depending on experience. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hires across all U.S. locations. Individual compensation is determined by experience, skills, location, and other job-related factors.
